Faith, An Eroding Education System and Corporate Social Responsibility

Pupils Attending Classes At Okotie Eboh Primary School Sapele

In an about 72 hours,  a viral video made of Success Adegor, a  pupil of Okotie Eboh Primary School 1 Sapele, made rounds on various social media platforms. It was alleged that she was sent home from school for not being able to pay the N900 ($4) exam fee that her school authorities prescribed. Several good Samaritans have arisen and taken on the exam fee for several children and I understand that Success has been relocated to a private school. End of story? I do not think so.

This was truly an eye-opener to the decadent quality of education that this elementary school is dishing out in the oil-rich Delta State of Nigeria.

As a people, we must demand that the responsible government authority be held accountable.

Let's come together as one people and renovate this school, build a library annex, a computer lab and improve the quality of education delivered at this school and similar schools in Nigeria.

The scripture I John 3:14-18 comes to mind: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.  But whosoever hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"

In an article titled "The Social Responsibility of the Church, the author opined that no responsible believer in Jesus Christ is happy about the presence of such social evils such as spiraling crime rate, the existence of slums and violence. He realizes that such conditions as these have the potential to destroy his society and therefore ought to be checked. But the problem facing the Christian and the church is their role in curing the ills of society. What is the church's responsibility in the area of social problems? Should the church involve itself in these problems? If so, to what extent?

I do agree that it is dangerous for the church to remain aloof and that it must do something to right wrongs in the social structure. They believe that the gospel carries social implications with it, and that it is wrong to neglect them. Not only is it wrong, but it is also damaging to the potential witness of the church. If the church does not get involved, then society will become more and more secular, making it all the more difficult for the church to penetrate it.

The question is raised, "If Jesus was concerned about the social ills of his day, then shouldn't His church be concerned about the evils of its day?"

Let's join hands to make a difference in our world.
